Unifor recognizes May 17 as the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) supporting the global theme of “At the heart of democracy” – a reminder that truly democratic societies must be grounded in justice and freedom for all.
2SLGBTQIA+ people around the world, along with everyone who cares for and with these communities, have long resisted infringements on the freedom and safety of queer and trans people.
ILGA World has tracked these pressures which include the following state-sanctioned restrictions on 2SLGBTQIA+ people;
65 United Nations member states still criminalize consensual same-sex sexual acts.
At least 62 restrict freedom of expression on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics issues.
Legal gender recognition based on self-determination is only available in 18 countries at the national level.
Only nine U.N. member States restrict unnecessary medical interventions on intersex minors at the national level.
On May 17, communities and allies around the world will make our mark in the fight against discrimination. Post the IDAHOBIT 2026 visual on your social media, with #IDAHOBIT2026.
Whether hosting a BBQ, a workshop or just putting up a Pride flag in your workplace, every step to support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in the workplace makes a difference towards building an inclusive and safe world for all.
To better support trans workers in your local union, review Unifor’s Workers in Transition guide with workplace leaders.
Human rights, including the rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ people, sit at the heart of democracy and must be defended by any free and equal society.
For Unifor members, IDAHOBIT also sits at the start of Canada’s annual pride season. Share your local provide events with pride@unifor.org to be featured in the union’s national listing of events.
In solidarity,
Lana Payne
Unifor National President
