The Unifor Tears to Hope walk/run to support Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and girls and two-spirited relations is coming up soon!!

Sisters, brothers, siblings, relations and friends;

The Unifor Tears to Hope walk/run to support Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and girls and two-spirited relations is coming up soon!! We have a handful of participants so far but we can do better. Remember this is a National event happening simultaneously across Canada.

Your local’s help in this important Unifor project is greatly needed. Even if one person per Local in Winnipeg participated, that would help achieve our goal. This event is open to friends and family, allies, community groups and other unions. So bring along a friend! We also are expecting Unifor National president Lana Payne to participate in the Winnipeg event.

You need to register through the Race Roster portal Login required — Tears to Hope relay race (Unifor members) — Race Roster — Registration, Marketing, Fundraising. You can join an existing team or create your own. Registration is $50 per team, but Locals may donate as much as they like on behalf of their team.

We are holding the 5k/10k Walk/Run on:

Saturday, June 17, 2023

11 a.m. CDT

Assiniboine Park, site 11 (just to the left of the ox cart statue at Shaftesbury entrance)

Registration information and other details are in the attached FAQ.

The walk will be a 5-km route along paved pathways adjacent to the Park, going into the Assiniboine Forest, looping around the Canadian Mennonite University and Tuxedo golf course and ending back at the starting point in the Park.

If you are unable to walk we are also looking for volunteers to help marshal participants around the course and hand out water etc. Please contact me directly if you would like to volunteer. If you wish to do the walk/run use the registration process outlined in the attached FAQ or at this link: Login required — Tears to Hope relay race (Unifor members) — Race Roster — Registration, Marketing, Fundraising.

Let’s do our part to make this event a success!

June is National Indigenous History Month

Dear members,

June is National Indigenous History Month. It is a great time to learn more about the varied cultural and artistic heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and to celebrate these contributions.

For June 2023 Unifor has partnered with the Aboriginal Peoples’ Television Network to sponsor Indigenous Day Live on June 17, a cultural and artistic show with the theme “Celebrating Our Youth.” The event celebrates Indigenous youth and their important contribution to communities and their role as future leaders.

Although the event is broadcast live at 7 p.m. CT from The Forks in Winnipeg, anyone can tune into the stream online at https://www.youtube.com/aptntv

Also this month, Unifor has partnered with the Tears to Hope Society to help expand the scope of their relay race to communities across Canada. Unifor local unions are encouraged to select a local 5 or 10-kilometre route and register as soon as possible to participate in the relay taking place on Saturday, June 17, 2023.

June 21 is the annual National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Mark it on your calendar and stay tuned for more ways to participate.

In solidarity,

Lana Payne
National President

Chères membres,
Chers membres,

Lana Payne
présidente nationale

PSAC ON STRIKE – Show Your Solidarity!

Good morning Sisters, Brothers & Friends,

As you’ve no doubt heard, Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) members took to the picket lines at 12:01 am EST. Following over 2 weeks of mediated talks, the employer (Treasury Board aka the Federal Government) has not addressed their members’ priority issues.

Picket lines are up in communities across the country, including here at home. A picket line finder can be found at https://workerscantwait.ca/. Please note that PSAC is making updates daily so be sure to check the website before heading out to show your support. Picket lines will be staggered throughout the day.

(For those of you operating out of the Union Centre in Winnipeg, there are picket lines up at 280 Broadway, right across the street, as well as at Union Station, 123 Main Street.)

We urge all affiliates to show solidarity by supporting PSAC members on the picket line.

PSAC would appreciate if you tag any messages of support / photos to their social media accounts @psacprairies on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (and please also share photos with their Political Communications Officer, Brianne Goertzen at goertzb@psac-afpc.com).

If your union would like to share a written message of support, they can be sent to Marianne Hladun, Regional Executive Vice-President (PSAC Prairies) and MFL Executive Council VP for PSAC: hladunm@psac-afpc.com

In Solidarity!

As we head into a provincial election later this year it’s important for Unifor members to support our healthcare workers and show this government we want to make our healthcare better. Later we can show this government the door. The staff of MAHCP are represented by Unifor Local 191.

Equal Pay Day / la Journée de l’égalité salariale

To: All Unifor Members, Local Union Presidents, Recording Secretaries, NEB and All Staff

This year, Equal Pay Day will be marked on April 4, meaning that women will have worked an extra quarter of a year just to earn what their male counterparts made last year.

Yes, we are still fighting for pay equality in 2023.

You can help us draw attention to this inequality by wearing red and sending your photo to women@unifor.org.

Unifor will post member and leader photos on April 4 to highlight our work to eliminate the gender wage gap and to call on all employers to pay women equally.

Unifor is a member of the Equal Pay Coalition, which works to dismantle the wage gap. I encourage you to visit their website for information on how the wage gap is calculated each year and check out these useful myth-busters.   Please share with your friends and co-workers who may have questions about pay disparity between men and women.

The Equal Pay Coalition highlights major factors that contribute to women’s economic inequality including:

  • The underemployment of women. Women make up the majority of part-time workers.
  • Lack of access to affordable childcare for women who want full-time work.
  • The segregation of women into lower paid job classes. In general, the higher the concentration of women, the lower the pay.
  • Women’s dominance in minimum wage jobs.
  • Women’s lack of access to collective bargaining.

We must also draw attention to how the pay gap increases substantially for those who face other forms of discrimination. Indigenous and racialized women, migrant and immigrant women, women who identify as LGBTQ, women with disabilities, and elderly women face additional barriers to pay equity.

So, wear red for April 4, send your photos to women@unifor.org, and stand in solidarity for pay equality.

Together, through organizing, collective bargaining, and making political change, we can eliminate the gender pay gap. Let’s keep organizing until we win!

In Solidarity,

Lana Payne
Unifor National President

  • le sous-emploi des femmes : elles représentent la majorité des travailleuses et travailleurs à temps partiel;
  • le manque d’accès à des services de garde d’enfants abordables pour les femmes qui veulent travailler à temps plein;
  • la ségrégation des femmes dans des catégories d’emplois moins bien rémunérés : en général, plus la concentration de femmes est grande, plus les salaires sont bas;
  • la prédominance des femmes dans les emplois au salaire minimum;

Lana Payne
